  • MELANCHOLIC PHOTO EFFECT IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

This effect makes your ordinary photograph have depth and emotion with a professional touch.

First you're going to open your original picture; here I'll be using the wonderful Toshiya of Dir en Grey.

You're then going to duplicate the photo and make it black and white
    ctrl + U > saturation -100

Put your Black and White layer at an Opacity of 50%

Create a new layer and fill it in with a solid grey.

You can darken the grey whichever shade you'd like depending on how dark you want the photo to be.

Then, put your layer option at Linear Burn. Your photo should show through.

After, you're going to flatten the entire thing.
    Layer > Flatten Image

Duplicate that image. (you should now be left with 2 layers of the same picture).

On your top layer, blur it
    Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur > 2.0 Radius

On that same layer, go to your layer option and put it as Hard Light

    This is your result!

In the end I added some textured effects for added atmosphere. Feel free to do that yourself, but remember not to overdo it.

    Simplicity is key.
