Yû Watase
Biography

Yû Watase was born in March 5th in Osaka, Japan. She exploded into the scene with her widely popular series Fushigi Yûgi. That was the series that made her more known in the Anime world. Fushigi Yûgi then released a few OVAs and soundtracks. Although the success of Fushigi Yûgi was hard to beat, Watase managed to come up with another popular series titled “Aya no Ceres.” Both series have been licensed and translated in North America by Viz. "I wanted to have a world that is more realistic and more dramatic than Fushigi Yûgi" Watase says about Ceres. “I don't like to settle in a genre. I might feel at home with one kind of story, but I don't feel that I'm growing as an author."

Watase is mostly, if not solely known as a shôjo artist. She focuses on the romantic side of relationships and also adds a lot of humor in her work. Yû claims she wants to stir many emotions from the audience as they read her manga. As of late, Yû Watase has been reading American comics and is fascinated with the artistic skill. "It's very realistic," she says of U.S. comics such as Batman. "I feel I have to preserve a Japanese art style, but I'd like to take an American technique to better my work."

Style Analysis: Yû Watase has a very girlish style. Her art generally is gentle and graceful with a use of light colors. There is a romance element to her pictures, usually an embrace. The female characters tend to have over-sized eyes, making them seem more innocent. They also usually have a full figured form. Watase style is not completely unique, as many shojo artists create their characters in the same formula as she does.
